Why Most People Don’t Think They Can Write Music…
Many people when they learn an instrument find themselves at some point wanting or wishing they could write music of their own. Often times these people think things like:
“I’m not talented enough”
“I’m not good enough to be able to write music”
“I can’t write music, I’m not creative enough”
Or any number of thoughts that could be going through their head.
I used to have thoughts like these and many others. They used to hold me back from having more fun with music and being to create music that I know I wanted to. All these thoughts have one thing in common.
That something came down to one word for me…
Perfectionism
I was always searching for the next perfect song idea and when I finally sat down to try and write something, I would be constantly disheartened and put off once again.

It was only years later that I started learning that ‘great’ musical ideas don’t just appear. If they do they’re like a needle in a haystack. Great song ideas and created, crafted, moulded into something great. How do you get to that stage though?
There are many ways you can get better at creating your own music. The most important way is to keep one concept in mind…
“Write for the trash can”
For now, if you have any desire at all, no matter how small, and how distant it may seem, try and sit down and write very short pieces of music with one aim in mind… for it to be thrown away.

Even if you just putting together a couple of chords and using a strumming pattern. It doesn’t have to be fancy :)
It all still counts towards you finally getting something that you don’t want to throw into the trash.
If you’ve ever played basketball, think how many times you throw the ball and it doesn’t end up in the hoop, before you get to a stage (Or rather Michael Jordan) got to a stage where he can just consistently put nearly every ball in the hoop.
